Freedom Quest Youth Services - Grand Forks

Provides free, community-based, client-centered, low-barrier, confidential, voluntary, and non-judgmental services and programming to youth & families who have been negatively impacted by substance use in the West Kootenay Boundary Region.

Services and programming support young people & their families in experiencing new opportunities, overcoming barriers, preventing further adversity, building positive relationships, and further developing the confidence and skills for life.

Programs can be accessed by young people between the ages of 12 - 19 who are being negatively impacted by their own substance use and/or the substance use of others.

Youth can self-refer, or referrals can be made by service providers or others.

The regional office is in Castlegar, with staff / offices in Grand Forks, Kaslo, Nakusp, Nelson, Salmo and Trail.

Youth Substance Use Counselling Services are available through the office in Grand Forks (and in other communities). If needed, the Counsellor will help to connect youth to regional programs including:

  • Regional Concurrent Disorders Clinician drives all around the West Kootenay Boundary Region meeting with youth who are looking for support.
  • Regional Alcohol & Drug Day Treatment Program (RADD) is located in Castlegar and, participants are supported in getting there. Freedom Quest's van will pick each participant up at their home in the morning and then drive them back home at the end of the day.  Each individual brings their own goals to RADD. As well, the group often talks about relationships, their own substance use, ways of coping, boundaries, family, communication, emotions, trauma, core beliefs, values, grief, loss, self-care, sexuality, mental health, etc.. The group also participates in weekly outdoor recreation. Group members can express their interest in canoeing, hiking, camping, biking and more!
  • Therapeutic Recreation Programming aims to support youth in their efforts to a) experience healthy relationships, b) participate in activities that may have been previously inaccessible to them, c) enjoy physical activity to promote their overall wellness, d) experience alternatives to substance use, and e) learn new skills.  This program takes place all over the West Kootenay Boundary Region. Youth have had the opportunity to ski Whitewater Ski Resort & Salmo Ski Hill, hike Syringa & Champion Lakes, snowshoe Strawberry Pass & Cottonwood Lake, and overnight at Whatshan Lake Retreat. They have also participated in mountain biking, fat biking, and canoeing.
  • Bike Shop Program is an activity-based therapeutic program that supports young people and their adult mentors in building healthy relationships with each
