Old Age Security Program - Old Age Security Pension
The Old Age Security (OAS) Pension is paid to Canadian citizens or legal residents who are age 65 and over and who have met the residence requirements. The pension can start at age 65 or be deferred for up to 60 months after that date in exchange for a higher monthly amount.
A full or partial OAS pension is paid based on the person's years of residence in Canada at the time the pension begins.
Eligibility for the OAS pension does not depend on work history, income or assets.
Apply in advance, preferably about 6 months before the pension is to begin.
Applications are available online or at a local Service Canada office.
Other benefits paid through the OAS program are the income-tested benefits: Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), the Allowance and the Allowance for Survivors.
