Old Age Security Program - Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is paid to seniors who receive the Old Age Security (OAS) Pension and whose income is under certain thresholds.

The amount of GIS is based on the senior's income. If the senior is married or living in a common-law union, the couple's combined income is considered.

The amount of GIS entitlement varies from year to year, based on income which must be reported yearly by filing a Canada Revenue Agency income tax form before April 30.

To enquire about income thresholds or to apply for the GIS, phone the toll-free number; obtain an application on-line or from a local Service Canada Office.
