Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Program

The Interior Health (IH) SAFE Program provides medical and forensic care for individuals who have experienced sexual violence and assault.

Medical care, or medical care and a forensic exam with report to police options are available upon request in the Emergency Departments of local hospitals and urgent care centres in the KB region including in Trail, Kaslo, Nakusp, New Denver, Castlegar, Grand Forks and Nelson.  This is made possible through the virtual support of the teleSAFE program which helps onsite staff with completing exams and guiding care.

The Emergency Department in the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail is currently the only centre in the region that can offer medical care, a forensic exam with storage of evidence for 1 year along with a report to police.

See the website or  "Brochure" (below) for more SAFE information

Note: If living in the Nelson or Nakusp Areas, the Sexual Assault Services Program offers information, resources and services in addition to the SAFE Program in Kootenay Lake District Hospital and the Arrow Lakes Hospital's Emergency Departments.
