Old Age Security Program - Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)
The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is paid to seniors who receive the Old Age Security (OAS) Pension and whose income is under a certain threshold.
The amount of GIS is based on the senior's income. If the senior is married or living in a common-law union, the couple's combined income is considered.
The amount of GIS entitlement varies from year to year, based on income which must be reported yearly by filing a Canada Revenue Agency income tax form before April 30.
To enquire about income thresholds or to apply for the GIS, phone the toll-free number; obtain an application on-line or from a local Service Canada Office.
