Rental Assistance Program (RAP)
A BC Housing program which provides eligible low-income working families with monthly assistance to help with their monthly rent payments.
Eligibility requirements include:
- Some, or all, of household income is from a job
- A total before-tax annual household income of $40,000 or less
- Has at least one or more dependent children. A dependent child is unmarried, a stepchild, adopted child or legal ward, mainly supported by applicant.
- Dependent children are: under 19 years of age, or under 25 years of age and are full-time students at a secondary school, university or vocational institute. Education providers must be a recognized place of study that grants diplomas, certificates or degrees, or Of any age, because of a mental or physical disability as defined by Canada Revenue Agency.
- Has less than $100,000 in assets.
- Files an annual income tax return.
- More than 30 per cent of household income goes towards household rent.; or pays pad rental for an owned manufactured home or trailer occupied by applicant.
- Lived in British Columbia for the full 12 months before the date of application.
- Meets the program residency requirements.
Families are not eligible if they live in subsidized or co-op housing, receive income assistance under the BC Employment and Assistance Act (excluding MSP) or own a home.
Recipients need to re-apply for program each year.
