The Advocacy Centre
Provides legal information, education and problem solving for low-income residents of several West Kootenay communities including Nelson, Castlegar, Kaslo, Salmo, the Slocan Valley and the Arrow & Slocan Lakes Area. (Note: Similar services are provided to the Trail & Boundary Areas by the Poverty Advocacy Program in Trail)
Advocacy staff travel to Castlegar twice a month. Call the Nelson office for schedules and appointments.
Provides remote services by phone and email if residents are not able to travel to the Nelson office.
Offers Community Based Victim Services to victims of relationship violence, sexual assault and child abuse in the Nelson Area.
As well as advocacy support to individuals, the Centre provides workshops and presentations on legal
issues. Focus of work and resources is on topics such as government benefits (welfare, disability, retirement pensions), family law, tenancy and debt.
Is a Legal Aid Community Partner which means staff can help clients get free legal information / advice, apply for Legal Aid and connect with other resources.
Advocacy services are free of charge.
