ANKORS: AIDS Network Outreach & Support Society
Serves those living with and at the greatest risk of acquiring HIV / AIDS and/or Hepatitis B & C, who have difficulty obtaining services elsewhere, especially due to substance use, mental illness, sexual orientation, gender identity, race and ethnicity, and/or other social barriers.
Provides confidential Harm Reduction services throughout the West Kootenay Boundary region and East Kootenay.
Drop-in Services in Nelson include: overdose prevention site, Naloxone kits & training, Drug checking & Fentanyl test strips, harm reduction supplies, safer sex supplies, Referrals for STI testing, Hep C support & connection to Crisis Counselling
Services available throughout the Kootenay Boundary include:
Harm Reduction Supplies / Needle Exchange: a regional program distributes harm reduction supplies on a monthly basis to individuals and provides free supplies for pick-up at various locations.
Drug Checking Program in the Nelson office and in Castlegar, Trail & Grand Forks as well as at festivals
Support & Outreach: outreach, support and advocacy for individuals (plus caregivers and families) living with HIV / AIDS, Hepatitis C and their support persons. Including: visiting individuals, crisis intervention and ongoing counseling, and advocacy to ensure that each positive person receives a high standard of care and support from health care providers and support services.
Prevention & Education: provides education, information, resources and counselling services on HIV/AIDS prevention to communities in the region. Sessions are delivered to organizations, schools, employee groups, individuals and social service agencies.
Peer Health Navigators: offers problem solving with people who’ve been there - ie those with personal experience with substance use, addiction, HIV+, homelessness, poverty, and trauma.
Hosts the TransConnect program which provides support and resources for Transgender and Gender Variant folks as well as offering educational workshops and resources for service providers, educators, mental health workers, and police in the Kootenays.
Works with other agencies on the Supportive Recovery Program in Nelson.
