Family LAWLINE

Individuals living on a low income and experiencing a family law issue, may be eligible for free legal advice over the telephone from a family lawyer.

Family LawLINE lawyers give brief "next step" advice about family law issues such as:

  • Parenting time or contact / access
  • Guardianship / custody
  • Child support
  • Spousal support
  • Property division
  • Family agreements, and
  • Court procedures.

This help may be available whether or not the individual qualifies for a legal aid lawyer.

To be considered for the Family LawLINE service, call the province-wide  Legal Aid BC during the times listed. An intake worker will ask questions about the individual's financial situation and legal issue. If the individual qualifies, the call will be transferred to the Family LawLINE service.

If the individual doesn't qualify for Family LawLINE services, the intake worker might make a referral to a  Legal Information Outreach Worker (LIOW) who can provide legal information about separation and divorce matters. LIOWs can also refer o other resources and help determine which community services are available.

Interpreters are provided if service is needed in a language other than English.
