Veterans Review and Appeal Board

If not satisfied with a decision made by the Department of Veterans Affairs, an application may be made to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board to review the decision.

The Board provides access to two levels of appeal: The Review Hearing and The Appeal Hearing. It also has authority, in certain circumstances, to reconsider a decision.

The Review Hearing, the first level of appeal, may review:

  • A decision of the Department of Veterans Affairs regarding a claim for disability pension, special award or surviving dependant benefits;
  • A First Decision of the former Canadian Pension Commission.

The Appeal Hearing, the second level of appeal, may review:

  • A Review Hearing decision of the Veterans Review and Appeal Board;
  • A decision of an Entitlement Board or an Assessment Hearing of the former Canadian Pension Commission;
  • A Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Review Committee decision for a War Veterans Allowance.

For information about advocacy support during an appeal process, see separate entries: Veterans Advocacy Programs or Bureau of Pensions Advocates.
